This Black History Month, I’m sharing art, songs, movies, and other creative expressions from and about Black women that spark joy for me. Because Black women are often not remembered for their contributions, I thought this would be one way to give flowers to those who influenced me.
For Day 4, I’m spotlighting the magnificent Doechii (AKA The Swamp Princess), who just became the third woman to win the Best Rap Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards this weekend.
At least weekly this fall, someone sent me a link to Doechii’s Tiny Desk performance, which is this refreshing combination of jazz, syncopated rap, and hip hop. It’s pure joy - I love the creativity and how Doechii shines her own brilliance by embracing her unique style. Witnessing Doechii do her thing makes me want to be brave enough to be my weirdest self more often.
There are so many things I loved about her acceptance speech at the Grammy’s this weekend. Cardi B, who was the 2nd woman to win the Best Rap Album, gasped with delight and seemed genuinely pleased to see Doechii win. Doechii brought her mother on stage to share the shine. The joy made my heart grow at least three sizes watching her.
Doechii said in her speech,
“I know that there are so many Black girls out there… so many Black women. And I want to tell you, you can do it. Anything is possible! Don’t Allow anybody to project stereotypes on you - that tell you that you can’t be here. That you’re too dark or you’re not smart enough. That you’re too dramatic or you’re too loud. You are exactly who you need to be.”
Message received.
Thank you, Doechii, for showing us who you are and reminding us that we can be take up space with our joy and uniqueness.
