It's Mardi Gras and it feels like I should absolutely send flowers to New Orleanian Rhonda Broussard, the CEO of Beloved Community.
I really love how Beloved Community approaches rest and time off. So often organizations try use unlimited PTO to solve the need for more rest. But research shows that people with unlimited PTO often end up taking less time off (https://buff.ly/3OGWwBE ). I believe it's because we're using an individual solution for a problem that requires a collective approach. When Rhonda and her team were explore how they could embed a practice of rest into their organization, they found they needed a collective approach and now take a monthly sabbatical together in February. https://buff.ly/3wn8cDe
Rhonda makes sure to emphasize that this rest practice isn't about finding a way to be more productive. Community rest is an act of resistance and part of Beloved's mission to change workplaces and communities to be more compassionate, able to create with abundance, and move towards collective liberation. Beloved intentionally built their business model to include rest, which has allowed them to grow and thrive while embracing rest. I'm really inspired by how Rhonda built this liberation practice while growing an organization. Rhonda proves a liberated economic model CAN exist. We can thrive AND rest. Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Et bon repos!)
This #BlackHistoryMonth, I'm celebrating 29 Black women who have influenced me through the ways they pursue their own liberation. Black women's work is often unrecognized and not cited, and this month I'm determined to pass out a few flowers to Black women. #Day13 #29LoveLettersToBlackWomen #GiveBlackWomenTheirFlowers
